The Big Rock (Alice Springs, Uluru, Kings Canyon)

12th May

We got a flight to Alice Springs, then took the free bus to our hostel Annies Place.
We then checked out the supermarket in the town and saw our first aborignies, though they werent very friendly (when I smiled at them they didn't smile back) in fact we felt quite vulnerable as they were staring at us.

13th May

We met our bus at 5.15am!!!! along with our other fellow travellers from all nations and our two guides. our first stop was at a Camel Farm, I had no idea that there were camels in australia (they also have wild ones roaming around the centre of oz)Any how I went on this camel ride at 7am which seemed quite sureal. Our next stop was to collect firewood from the bush. we were wearing flip flops and there were loads of tiny thorns, we had to be very aware of moving logs aka snakes!!

After a few more hours travelling we arrived at our camp site which was near uluru (ayers rock) and had lunch. WE then visited Kata Tjuta (sand dunes) and walked along them and to the look out points. we then headed back to see sunset over uluru.
It was amazing because the rock was lit up bright red. We slept underneath the stars in swag bags which was quite a scary experience as you could hear the dingoes (wild dogs) howling. It was also freezing so I had very little sleep.

14th May

We woke up and 5.15am yet again!!! I was beginning to wonder why we went on the tour but it was well worth getting up to see the sun rise over uluru. We had a choice to walk around the rock or climb it. As it was frowned upon to climb it because of the aboriginal beliefs we walked around it and saw some of the aboriginal message paintings in the caves.

Our guides then took us around other parts which were sacred parts and explained some of the stories eg food and medicine. we also had a look around the visitor centre and saw a few presentations from some Aboriginals. Back on the bus. We had a quick stop off to see Mount Conner, which apparently a few people get mixed up with Uluru and then go home after seeing that. I personally thought it looked like a huge toothbrush! we then drove on to our Campsite nr kings Canyon where we saw 2 dingoes as we drove in (not good!!!) A few of us watcged the sunset go down over Kings Canyon as we were walking back we realised that one of the japanese boys was missing, we had a quick look around but it was getting dark and we forgot to bring torches so we headed back to camp and he was sat there drinking next to the fire! At night it got really really cold so we had dinner around the fire. that night I was prepared for the cold and put on almost everything I had brought with me - leggings, pjs, joggers,5 tops, scarf, hat and socks! Sinead had one of her 'brilliant ideas' and slept under the bench to get away from the dingoes, I personally thought it was rather foolish as the dingoes get attarcted to food and thats where we had been eating!! thanks to my many layers I slepy almost all the way through the night until the dingoes started howling. We also had a bit of a lie in until 6am then we went on a walk around Kings Canyon. though it started with a hill named Heart Attack Hill. Thank goodness it wasnt that bad and there were spectacular views at the top. WE also saw an amazing rock that had a tortoise on one side and a rabbit on the other! One of our tour guides (Sean) looked like Indiana Jones so when there was a wooden bridge over the Garden of eden it was definately a kodak moment. we saw the lake that apparently some people swim in but none of our group did as the water looked gross. Bus journey back to alice springs.
